シェムリアップから北へ約40km、片道約1時間で到着する位置にある中型寺院で「女の砦」という意味を持つ。
紅色砂岩とラテライトで造られており、深く刻まれた精緻な彫刻が見せる黒と紅色の色調が美しい。
「東洋のモナリザ」と呼ばれる彫刻が有名な他、破風にはヒンドゥー神話の彫刻も多く、様々な神が登場する。
植民地時代、仏人アンドレ・マルローはこの寺院から四体の「モナリザ」を盗掘し、途中逮捕された。
その後、本国へ送還された後もアンコール王朝への熱は冷めず、その思いを綴ったのが小説「王道」であった。遺跡保護の為、中央塔付近は立ち入り禁止となっている。
