ロリュオス地方からアンコール地域に遷都され、最初に築かれた山岳寺院。
76mの正方形の寺院には108本の小祠堂が建ち、その中央に少し大きめの祠堂が残る。
プノンクロム、プノンボックとともにアンコール三聖山のひとつとされる。
夕日鑑賞のベストポイントとして知られており、アンコールワットを一望できる（17:30には入山禁止）。
また、朝日鑑賞も人気だが夜明け前の山道を通らなければならないため、個人で行くのは避けたほうが無難。
寺院までは徒歩15分ほどの長い山道だが、夕方だと象に乗って上り下りできる（上り20US$、下り15US$）。
