The increasing amount of plastic garbage is a big environmental problem that is becoming very serious in Cambodia. Plastic Free South Asia is a social enterprise that has been active since 2015 in Cambodia with an emphasis on the part of “do not use” or “do not make” plastic products. The company is working to solve problems through enlightenment activities for efforts to deal with plastic pollution and the recommendation and sale of products and ideas that replace plastics. At the workshop, you can learn the causes and background of environmental pollution with plastics and how to deal with them. They will also promote environmentally friendly product information sharing and sales. Currently, activities are not limited to Cambodia only but are spreading to the rest of Southeast Asia.

Garbage is not separated but rather transported and accumulated into a big pile. Actually, there are still a lot of people who are looking for things that can be sold as resources from such a big garbage pile. Accumulated plastic waste is washed away by heavy rain, flows into rivers, and is transported to the sea, causing various problems.

The main industry in Cambodia is tourism. There is about 2,205,274 tourists a year who visit Siem Reap, the site of the world heritage, Angkor Wat (*1). If they consume three 500ml PET bottles per day, about 2.4 billion PET bottles are thrown away in Siem Reap annually.
“Refill not Landfill” is a global campaign to reduce single-use plastic waste, founded in 2016 by Christian de Boer (Jaya House Hotels) and Dean McLachlan (JustRide Motorbike Adventures). Partner companies distribute or sell refill bottles made of aluminum or stainless steel to customers. Customers can refill drinking water freely at many refill stations installed in all parts of Cambodia, including 73 places in Siem Reap. There are currently 18 participating countries, more than 170,000 refill bottles sold, and 1374 refill stations (*2). So far, 300 million PET bottles have been reduced.

Plastic products continue to increase with the development of the Cambodian economy. Behind the convenience of life, many environmental problems appear prominently. Under this situation, cleanup activities that actively involve locals and staff of companies such as hotels are gradually spreading. There are also cleanup activities after big events such as the water festival, and by posting such activities to SNS, these problems are gradually recognized by the younger generation. We hope that these moves are not just a trend, but will continue moving forward.

These clean-up activities are not just picking up trash, but also promoting to understand the importance of plastic-free.
